My name is Gabby Traxler and I am a junior cyclist from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I am currently in Grade 12 at the National Sport School located at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
I have been selected to attend the Parcours Institute Professional Rider Certificate Program which runs from February 15 to March 19. The Parcours Institute was developed in conjunction with 2x Olympian Zach Bell and partners to create a certification for riders that are trying to become a professional cyclist. The program is delivered in three stages -- Stage 1: sponsorship relations, media training, domestique skills, mechanical skills, and base miles. Stage 2: nutrition, ethical sport, racing skills, team communal skills, and moderate intensity training. Stage 3: mental skills, business of cycling, personal preparation, race preparation, and moderate-high intensity training. For more information, check out their website at http://parcoursinstitute.org/.
I am raising funds to help cover my travel and tuition costs of the program. The Parcours Institute will help me prepare for my race season this summer and to help achieve my goals to be selected to be a part of Team Canada for the 2016 season and ultimately, to be a professional cyclist. Living in Calgary, winter training is difficult and mostly on rollers. Having the opportunity to be in California, cycling on the road, is critical for my development.
I grew up playing soccer and was fortunate enough to be on our provincial team as well as going to nationals with my club team. In the fall of 2013, I made the decision to try a new sport. I signed up for cross country running, track running and cycling. In the back of my head, I knew I could go back to soccer but after completing my first road race season in the summer of 2014, I didn't look back! I loved cycling. I went to Cyclocross Nationals in the Fall of 2014 and Road Nationals in the summer of 2015 and thereafter, I was selected to go to Road Worlds in Richmond, Virginia with the Canadian National Junior team. It was a dream come true to wear the maple leaf.
After being with Synergy Racing (local Calgary club) for the past two years, I am now racing for Trek Red Truck Racing out of Vancouver, British Columbia. I am very thankful for this new opportunity as well as for everything cycling has given to me both on and off the bike. I want to continue to work hard and continue to improve. By attending the Parcours Institute, I will be one step closer to achieving my goals.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way with their support and encouragement.
